Hayao Miyazaki Honored with 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Award

Legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and director of iconic films such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, has been selected as a recipient of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award. Often referred to as “Asia’s Nobel Prize,” this prestigious award is given to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to society, embodying the values of integrity, service, and leadership that the award’s namesake, former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, was known for.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, headquartered in Manila, announced Miyazaki’s selection on Saturday, alongside three other individuals and one organization as the 2024 laureates. Miyazaki’s work has long been celebrated for its deep exploration of complex themes such as environmental protection and peace, presented in ways that are accessible and meaningful to audiences of all ages, especially children. His films have not only entertained but also educated, offering viewers a unique perspective on pressing global issues through the lens of fantastical storytelling.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Manila this November, where Miyazaki and the other honorees will be formally recognized for their remarkable achievements.

This accolade adds to Miyazaki’s long list of honors, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential filmmakers of our time. His ability to weave profound messages into captivating narratives has left an indelible mark on both the world of animation and the hearts of millions around the globe.
